Rachid Khimoune’s universe is an imaginary world inhabited with real and invented animals. Composed by objects that surround our daily life, his “bestiary” as he says, is now internationally recognized by the critics.
There
is humor in "Rasta Fish" whose locks of hair are made
of bicycle chains.
With "Tortoises" whose shell is made of a military helmet, Rachid
denounces the "horrors of war".
In his series "Prise de Tête" made of light switches
and light bulbs, the artist revisits with poetry these ordinary objects
that
we handle every day without ever looking at them
Faithful to his roots, Rachid gets his inspiration from the Africans masks
and diverts them to create what he calls himself his “Mascarades”.
He uses different materials to remind the mix of cultures.
Fidèle à ses racines, Rachid va s'inspirer des masques africains
et les détourner pour créer ce qu'il appelle ses « Mascarades »,
mélange de matériaux « Métis ».
With numerous monumental realizations, Rachid is “exposed” since
1975 in a dozen of museums and several public collections.
Of Rachid Khimoune writes the art critic Pierre Restany: “Memory
has seized for itself all sorts of potential visual potential, itself boundless
in oral possibilities and this vital eclecticism translates, without any
sort of deceitful action, into a the universality of a language borne of
a very
personal shorthand of instinct."
